The Vineyards of Beaujolais

The vine was established here as early as the Gallo Roman era (956 AD). The Benedictine monks of Cluny, who built a priory, one mile from l'Hestrange, in Salles, were very familiar with the cultivation of the vine. For a long time Beaujolais wines were popular in Lyons and Paris, and became quite well known on the export market from the early 1970's. In the 1930s, when the wine appelation classification were put in place, the vineyards of beaujolais were incorporated legitimately in the Burgundy region (decree 31/07/1937). Since 2000, Laurent Metge-Toppin has been planting Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines. Château de l'Hestrange is now able to offer a wide range of still and sparkling wine.
